Obesity & Infertility

obesity-infertilityBulging belly was once a sign of prosperity but the scene has fast changed now. Excess deposition of fat is no longer related to affluence rather it is an indication of the fact that you are susceptible to a myriad of health ailments such as infertility, diabetes, hypertension, osteoarthritis and other life threatening disorders.

There is no second say that obesity is the underlying cause of a variety of medical complications. An important point is that obesity not only changes our external appearance but also creates imbalance in the enzymes and hormones in your body. Obesity increases the body mass index which is responsible for infertility.

Obesity Infertility Statistics

Researches show that almost 70% of obese females are infertile. Low sperm count is seen in obese men and this mitigates their chances of conception.

Obesity is the excess accumulation of fat/adipose tissues in the body. Obesity results in psychological, mechanical and even interpersonal problems.

Alterations in the sex hormones result in infertility in both men and women. Decreased production of testosterone and low sperm count is seen in males while in females the common problem is polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Obesity Treatment: The treatment of infertile obese couples requires a focused approach and determination towards curing obesity. Obesity can be due to genetic factors that are out of your control, but lifestyle alterations play a pivotal role in harnessing the problem to a large extent. To treat Obesity, importance should be given in controlling weight gain and improving the quality of life.

10 Reasons How Obesity is directly linked with Infertility Here are mentioned reasons why obesity is linked with infertility:

1. Ovulatory Dysfunction
It is a leading cause of infertility in women with obesity. Imbalances in the levels of progesterone, estrogen and androgens result in menstrual cycles disturbances leading to infertility. For successful pregnancy and conception an optimal level of such hormones is a must. Excess accumulation of fat in ovaries may disturb the embryonic development and can cause miscarriages

2. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
PCOS is a condition characterized by hormonal imbalance and appearance of large number of small cyst in the ovaries. Learn how obesity and PCOS are linked.

3. Menstrual Disturbances
As a consequence of excessive weight gain woman may experience disturbances in her menstrual cycle. This is attributed to hormonal disturbance. As a result of obesity, infertility may ensue.

4. Decreased Libido
Obesity is directly related to decreased libido in both males and females. The desire for sex is diminished to a great extent with increasing weight. Conception is therefore out of question.

5. Decreased Sperm Count
Well decreased sperm production is very common in obese males. With low sperm count conception becomes a major problem in males.

6. Erectile Dysfunction
“The ability to sustain an erection depends on a complex interplay of sensory nerves and blood vessels and frequent breakdown in the sequence of events leading to erection is known as erectile dysfunction disorder”.

7. Abnormal Sperm Production
Estrogen is produced by fat cells and in obese men the amount of estrogen produced is more than non- obese men. This estrogen cause abnormal sperm production.

8. Obesity Causes Interference in Ovulation
Obesity causes an increased production of estrogen. Estrogen is known to interfere in the process of ovulation due to imbalance in estrogen and progesterone ratios. This retards the chances of having a successful conception.

9. Affects Uterus
High levels of estrogen are related to obesity. This can result in uterine pre-cancerous transformations.

10. Interferes with Fertility Drugs
Obese women are less responsive to fertility medications as the excess weight interferes in the proper absorption of the fertility drugs.
